Irvine residents who successfully urged the City Council to accept the FivePoint Communities offer to quickly finish the Great Park

Planning Commission Approves Master Plan Modification, Gaido Still Pushing for Canyon

On July 17, 2014, the Irvine Planning Commission considered: ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARK MASTER PLAN MODIFICATION NO. 2; PLANNING AREA 51.  See http://www.irvinequickrecords.com/sirepub/mtgviewer.aspx?meetid=4651&doctype=Agenda for the Staff Report.

We are pleased to report that this item passed, however, the vote was 3-2 with Commissioners Kuo, Smith, and Schott approving the Plan and Commissioners Gaido and Liss voting no.  Build The Great Park Now provided a letter of support.

Laughably, Commissioner Gaido is still pushing for a canyon that recent documents from the Great Park audit have shown could never be built.  Minutes are here: http://www.ci.irvine.ca.us/civica/filebank/blobdload.asp?BlobID=25635.  Audit story is here: http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-runaway-park-20140803-story.html

Quote from the story:

“Ideas that seemed to gain traction among board members would be dropped without explanation, while others — such as a canyon carved from the earth — were allowed to proceed without realistic assessments of their feasibility, he testified.

“The idea of being able to build a canyon and a lake and a cultural center and stay within what everybody was talking about at the time, a $1.3-billion budget, was lunacy,” Kogerman said.”
